JANESVILLE — The School District of Janesville will hold three community meetings as it continues to develop plans for its facilities.
The district recently received the summary findings of the district’s facilities assessment, the first step in developing a long-term facilities plan for SDJ.
The facilities assessment is a comprehensive analysis of the district’s 19 academic buildings, which cover approximately 2 million square feet, and their associated sites.
All told, the assessment found that addressing every need in the district could cost roughly $570 million.
Six of the district’s facilities were constructed before 1940, with one dating to the 1880’s.
Key facilities assessment findings include:
● Numerous buildings have mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems at or beyond their useful life. Several buildings have roofs at the end of their useful life. Multiple facilities also have inefficient single-pane (non-insulated) windows;
● Many buildings lack breakout areas and large group instructional spaces used for collaboration, small group instruction, or co-teaching;
● Most career and technical education and family and consumer science labs are out-of-date;
● While the district has made important strides in improving safety and security, implementing “layered” security and improving traffic flow can further enhance student and staff safety
● Specialty spaces like theaters and athletics facilities have deficiencies.
As an essential component of developing the SDJ long-range facilities plan, the district is seeking public input and is hosting “Community Conversations” events.
There are three opportunities (repeated) during which you can learn more about our schools’ facility challenges and provide feedback.
Residents input will help guide the Board of Education’s next steps as it addresses this important community-wide issue.
