JANESVILLE — Shortly after noon Thursday, The Janesville Fire Department responded to a reported gas leak on Jackson Street.

Upon arrival, units found a large underground gas line had been hit while digging and the leak was loudly venting, according to a news release shared by Janesville Firefighters Local 580 on their Facebook page.

Occupants in nearby homes were evacuated as a precautionary measure until the gas could be shut off and a safety perimeter was established.

Alliant Energy crews responded quickly and were able to shut off the gas shortly after they arrived.

Evacuated occupants returned to their homes and JFD units cleared the scene.
