JANESVILLE — An anonymous donor has pledged to match $250,000 in donations to the Children’s Museum of Rock County, moving the project ever-closer to reality.

In a post Tuesday on its Facebook page, the museum said the donor will match donations between now and Dec. 31, 2024 at kidsatplayrc.com/campaign

Before this latest pledge, the museum had announced they had raised $8.4 million so far toward their $10 million goal.

The proposed museum will be located in the former First National Bank building on West Milwaukee Street in downtown Janesville.

The museum has been in the works in one form or another since 2006 when members of the Leadership Development Academy identified a children’s museum as a pressing community need.

The Museum was set to launch in 2008/09 until the Great Recession hit in autumn 2008 and General Motors-Janesville announced its plant closure in December of the same year.

Those external conditions put the plans on hold.

Since then, the idea has been re-kindled by dedicated volunteers and is now very close to raising enough money to begin work on the facility.
