JANESVILLE — Ten residents living in a upstairs apartment were evacuated early Saturday morning after fire was reported in the building in downtown Janesville.

Two Janesville firefighters were transported to the hospital for heat exhaustion and released.

Janesville Fire responded about 1:15 a.m. Saturday to 410 W. Milwaukee (Formally known as Big Ed’s Sew and Vac) for a report of a commercial fire, according to a news release from Janesville Firefighters Local 580.

The fire was discovered by Janesville police officers who coordinated evacuation of 10 residents living on the second floor prior to firefighters’ arrival.

When they arrived, firefighters found flames coming out the rear of the building near the alley way.

A “Working Still” alarm was requested, bringing additional resources to the scene.

Fire attack was performed, while other crews completed a search of the structure and upstairs apartment to confirm all residents had evacuated safely.

Smoke damage was significant throughout the entire structure.

Units remained on scene for several hours.

No damage estimates are available at this time and the scene remains under investigation.
