The Hedberg Public Library board in Janesville announced at its most recent meeting that the library will be going fine-free as of Sept. 1, 2024.

JANESVILLE — The Janesville City Council on Monday will hold a public hearing on a proposed ordinance amendment that would remove homeless people from the Hedberg Public Library. (AGENDA)

The ordinance amendment would repeal permission to sleep in parked vehicles on the Hedberg Public Library parking lot. Read the staff memo HERE

Violators could be fined from $20 to $200 or jailed for no more than 60 days as set forth in Janesville city ordinance 38-258.

Concerned residents have pointed out on social media that a plan proposed five years ago to build tiny homes for the homeless couldn’t overcome a number of hurdles.

In the meantime, they say, projects like the Woodman’s Center and the Palmer Park Aquatic Center have been approved using primarily taxpayer money.

A companion ordinance would prohibit motor homes, campers, and related vehicles upon city of Janesville public parking lots, with penalties. Read the staff memo HERE.

The council meeting begins at 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 26 in the Council Chambers, 18 North Jackson Street,
Janesville.
