JANESVILLE — The Wisconsin Historical Society announced this week that Adams Elementary School in Janesville has been listed on the State Register of Historic Places.
The school is located at 1138 East Memorial Drive on Janesville’s east side.
Adams Elementary School was constructed in 1939 in fulfillment of the Janesville Board of Education’s early 20th century building program that established a three-tier system of graded elementary, junior high, and senior high schools.
It is one of four elementary schools constructed in Janesville between 1929 and 1939 and is one of the four oldest operating elementary schools in the city that was expanded three times to meet evolving educational needs.
Adams Elementary School’s architecture is an example of the Classical Revival style and was designed by the architectural firm of Law, Law, and Potter in Madison. The first of three additions was completed in 1952 by the same firm and matched the aesthetic of the original school building. The subsequent additions were completed in 1976 and 1995 to the side and rear of the elevations with minimal impact to the historic character of the original school and the 1952 addition.
The State Register is Wisconsin’s official list of state properties determined to be significant to Wisconsin’s heritage. The State Historic Preservation Office at the Wisconsin Historical Society administers both the State Register and National Register in Wisconsin.
