UPDATE 8:35 p.m. — Police say a 15-year-old girl has been identified as the suspected shooter that killed a teacher and fellow student Monday at a private Christian school in Madison, Wisconsin.

The shooter was found dead at the scene shortly after police arrived by what authorities say was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The weapon was recovered at the scene.

In the evening news conference, Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said in error a second grader was the first to call 911 at 10:57 a.m. to report a shooting at Abundant Life Christian School on Madison’s east side.

That later was corrected to say it was a second-grade teacher who made the call.

The shooting took place in a classroom during a study hall attended by students from multiple grades.

Two students remain in critical condition Monday night with life threatening injuries. A teacher and three students also were injured.

MADISON — Three people have been killed, including a teacher, a student and the juvenile suspect, in a school shooting Monday at a small Christian school in the Wisconsin state capital of Madison.

In two Monday news conferences, Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said officers were first called shortly before 11 a.m. to Abundant Life Christian School in Madison for a report of an active shooter.

Barnes said when the first officers arrived on scene, they found multiple people who were shot, and the suspected shooter, a juvenile and student at the school, was found dead.

Six additional people were injured and transported to local hospitals. Two remain in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

“Today is a sad day for Madison and our country,” Barnes said. “I think we all can agree that enough is enough.”

The scene has been cleared and students are being reunified with their families.

The school serves nearly 400 students from the Madison area in grades K-12. This was the last week of school before Christmas break.

Police are expected to provide another update about 2:30 p.m.

Madison police released a statement earlier in the afternoon to clarify incorrect information released at the earlier news conference.

“At this time, three people are deceased. During the media briefing earlier this afternoon, it was erroneously shared 5 were deceased,” police now say.

Nine in total were injured, including the three deceased.

Parents and guardians have been directed to go to the Dean Clinic on Stoughton Road for reunification.

In a statement on its Facebook page, the school asked for prayers.

“Prayers requested. Today, we had an active shooter incident at ALCS. We are in the midst of following up. We will share information as we are able,” read the post.

SSM Health Dean Medical Group Madison East, located nearby the shooting scene on Stoughton Road, said they were ending all operations for the day.

The clinic will reach out to reschedule all appointments.

Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers said he is closely monitoring the incident.

“We are praying for the kids, educators, and entire Abundant Life school community as we await more information and are grateful for the first responders who are working quickly to respond,” he wrote on social media.
