JANESVILLE — The Janesville Fire Department responded Tuesday evening to a residential fire at a four-unit apartment building on the 400 block of Franklin Street.
Firefighters were called about 6:45 p.m. and arrived to find black smoke and flames coming from the second story of the building.
The fire had spread to the attic.
Crews used two hose lines to extinguish the fire, which was contained to the apartment where the fire started and the surrounding walls and ceiling.
All residents were safely evacuated from the building. There were no injuries reported.
The fire caused an estimated $175,000 in damage. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The Janesville Fire Department was assisted by the Janesville Police Department, Janesville Transit, Janesville Public Works, Red Cross, Alliant Energy, Beloit Fire Department, and off-duty Janesville firefighters.
The building is currently under fire watch as of Wednesday morning.
