JANESVILLE – The Janesville fire department says a trash fire at the Janesville landfill grew to an acre in size before being put out Sunday afternoon.

According to a news release, firefighters were called out about 3 p.m. for a trash and rubbish fire.

When they arrived, crews found one acre of the landfill was burning heavily.

Twenty-four firefighters and 160,000 gallons of water were used to bring the fire under control.

The Janesville Fire Department was assisted by off-duty Janesville firefighters, as well as firefighters from Lakeside, Evansville, and Footville Fire Departments, the Janesville Police Department, and the City of Janesville Landfill Staff.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Janesville Fire Department.
