JANESVILLE — The city of Janesville is in the early stages of planning to replace its west side fire station that officials say has become outdated.
City officials on Tuesday will make a presentation to the School District of Janesville Board of Education to discuss the feasibility of using empty school district property just south of Franklin Middle School.
The board meeting is open to the public and will be broadcast live at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2025.
According to the presentation, a 2025 facility analysis determined that remodeling the current station at 435 N. Crosby Ave. is not feasible.
Built in 1969, the current station is roughly 6,300-square-feet. A new facility should be about 11,000-square-feet, which would not fit on the current site.

A proposed site just south of the current middle school, and west of Madison Elementary School would be ideal, officials say, because the current station could remain operating while construction is under way, and the location in the heart of the west side is preferred.
Alternative site discussions are expected to continue throughout the winter, with eventual construction beginning sometime in the summer of 2027.
