JANESVILLE— Janesville’s Monroe Elementary School was recognized a week ago in Washington D.C. by the U.S. Department of Education as a National Blue Ribbon school.

Monroe was one of 353 schools named in September as 2023 National Blue Ribbon Schools.

The Department formally recognized the schools at an awards ceremony on November 16 and 17, 2023 in Washington, DC.

Dr. Allison DeGraaf (Director of Learning and Innovation for the School District of Janesville), Sally Pope (Principal at Monroe) and Dennis Condon (Academic Learning Coach at Monroe) accepted the award in Washington, D.C., on behalf of Monroe staff, students and families.

The recognition is based on a school’s overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student groups on assessments.

“The entire team at Monroe Elementary School should be proud of this recognition,” said Mr. Mark Holzman, Superintendent in a news release. “This award represents the work of the students, staff, and families at Monroe, with everyone focused on helping every child succeed.”

Monroe Elementary became the 3rd School District of Janesville awardee, joining Kennedy Elementary School (2011) and Roosevelt Elementary (2014).

St. Paul’s Lutheran School in Janesville also received the award in 1992.
