UPDATE 6 p.m.: Firefighters remain on scene knocking down hot spots. The Red Cross is assisting the residents of 23 units who have been displaced.
JANESVILLE — Firefighters were on the scene Monday afternoon of a major fire at the Surrey Ridge Apartment complex on East Racine Street in Janesville.
The fire started shortly before 2 p.m., and flames were visible shooting through the roofs f the middle building of the complex.
Authorities shut down the eastbound lane of Racine Street about 2:30 p.m. as smoke and debris began crossing the road. The road has since reopened.
Dozens of vehicles from multiple departments assisted at the scene.
Red Cross disaster-trained volunteers are currently assisting residents that have been displaced by the fire. if you need assistance, please call 1-800-RED CROSS.
