JANESVILLE — A man wanted in connection ro an attempted homicide is in custody after shooting at police while being chased through a Janesville neighborhood.
The incident began about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday when an off-duty officer observed Tyrone Gibson, who had a temporary warrant for Attempted First Degree Homicide from a shooting last week.
Officers responded to the area of Oakhill and Barham and saw Gibson on foot, according to a Janesville Police Department news release.
A uniformed officer confronted Gibson and the officer told Tyrone to show his hands.
That’s when police say Gibson drew a firearm from his waistband and pointed it at a detective who had just arrived.
Gibson fired one shot at the detective and missing, police said.
Gibson then fled through the residential area.
Police say officers did not return fire, knowing their background included occupied homes.
Additional officers arrived in the area and set up a perimeter, while other officers pursued Gibson, who was still armed, and on foot.
Gibson was running through yards trying to avoid capture. Gibson allegedly made threats to a citizen, who was outside, while Gibson was still armed and fleeing.
Gibson was surrounded in the 1700 block of Peterson Ave and was taken into custody without injury to citizens, officers, or Gibson.
Gibson is currently being held at the Rock County Jail.
