JANESVILLE — After a 47-year career with the Janesville Police Department that includes the past 15 as chief, David Moore today announced he is stepping down to retire.

Moore most recently also served as interim city manager leading up to the hiring of Kevin Lahner.

“I want to thank the community for your trust and support of the police department,” Moore said in a news release. “Law enforcement in America works best with a police department that respects its citizens and a community that trusts its police officers. In Janesville, we enjoy both.”

Moore’s last day will be Sept. 22, 2023.

It is with deep gratitude and honor that I announce my retirement from the Janesville Police Department.

There is always a reason to stay and seldom a good time to leave. There will always be more work to do, another project to start, or the next great idea to pursue. And in all these efforts, a continual focus on better serving our community.

However, now is the right time to retire. Our City has collectively worked together to achieve a historically low crime rate. The pandemic has subsided, and in our post-Minneapolis world, social unrest has also diminished.

The police department is on the cusp of attaining reaccreditation, our unprecedented hiring processes are winding down, and our bench is deep with dedicated, enlightened, well-educated, seasoned leaders. The department has deputy chiefs ready to be the chief, lieutenants ready to be deputy chiefs, sergeants ready to be lieutenants, and officers ready to be sergeants.

I work with officers and staff who hold great respect for our citizens, believe in problem-solving principles, possess an entrepreneurial work perspective, and have empathy for others.

In summary, the Janesville Police Department is well-positioned for my departure. My last day in the office will be September 22, 2023.
I will leave in my 47th year with the police department and my 15th year as police chief.

I want to thank the community for your trust and support of the police department. Law enforcement in America works best with a police department that respects its citizens and a community that trusts its police officers. In Janesville, we enjoy both.
