PLATTEVILLE — University of Wisconsin-Platteville has confirmed that two students have died in an incident Monday at a campus residence hall, according to multiple media reports.
In an email late Monday night, Chancellor Tammy K Evetovich said, “It is with deep sadness that we mourn the loss of two UW-Platteville students, Kelsie Martin, 22, of Beloit, Wisconsin, and Hallie Helms, 22, of Baraboo, Wisconsin. This incident was a targeted and isolated event between the two individuals. Families of the students have been notified.”
Students first learned about the incident when a shelter in place alert was issued late in the day Monday. The alert was cleared not long after.
Commencement already took place for graduating students, however remaining finals for this week have been canceled.
Gov. Tony Evers issued a statement Monday night, saying, “I’ve been briefed on the situation at UW-Platteville, and we will continue to remain in close contact with university officials. As we await more information, please keep UW-Platteville students, faculty, staff, and the greater Platteville community in your thoughts.”
