JANESVILLE — After stopping a vehicle driving 44 m.p.h. in a school zone and other violations, Janesville police are warning motorists.
Students have been back in school for just under a month, and police say crossing guards and officers continue to observe reckless and dangerous driving behaviors that put children at risk.
On Tuesday morning, an officer covering a crossing guard location while running speed detection equipment stopped a vehicle traveling 44 mph in a 15 mph school zone as children waited to cross.
At another location, an officer stopped a driver who failed to yield to a crossing guard standing in the roadway after just escorting children across.
These incidents are not isolated, according to a JPD social media post.
Crossing guards have reported:
Motorists failing to stop even as they stand in the roadway wearing high-visibility vests and holding stop signs.
Drivers speeding through school zones.
Motorists making right-hand turns into the crosswalk while children are crossing.
The Janesville Police Department reminds everyone:
Slow down and obey traffic laws in school zones.
Yield to pedestrians and bicyclists in the crosswalk.
Stop and remain stopped for crossing guards until they are safely out of the intersection.
