JANESVILLE — Craig and Parker students with a variety of physical and cognitive abilities will now have chance to represent their schools and compete in high school sports with a new adapted sports program beginning this school year.
The School District of Janesville on Tuesday announced the official launch of its new Adapted Sports League, bringing interscholastic athletic opportunities to student-athletes at both Craig and Parker High schools.
Janesville is the first district in Rock County to establish an adapted sports program for its students.
The program spans three sports seasons across the school year:
- Fall: Soccer
- Winter: Floor Hockey
- Spring: Wiffle Ball
“This is an amazing opportunity for our students,” said Ben McCormick, athletic director at Craig High School. “Bringing an Adapted Sports League to Craig and Parker High Schools allows us to break down barriers and ensure every student-athlete experiences the pride, camaraderie, and excitement of high school competition. We couldn’t be more excited to see our athletes put on their school colors and compete on the court. We hope to have a great turnout from our community and student body at games this season.”
Eight-Team Regional Conference
Janesville joins a competitive conference featuring seven other regional programs, bringing the league to eight teams total:
- Sun Prairie East High School
- Sun Prairie West High School
- DeForest Area High School
- Middleton High School
- Waunakee Community High School
- Verona/Mount Horeb Cooperative Team
- Craig High School (SDJ)
- Parker High School (SDJ)
Students from Craig and Parker will compete directly against these conference teams throughout each season.
Collaborative Support
The program is coordinated directly by the School District of Janesville Athletic Department, with strong support from the Special Education Director. Game-day operations, coaching, and officiating are made possible through the dedicated support of staff volunteers and athletic referees.
