JANESVILLE — If there’s a person who lives and breathes the Ice Age National Scenic Trail, it’s Dennis James of Janesville.

That’s why the Ice Age Trail Alliance has named him as the 2025 recipient of its most prestigious award: the Spirit Stick. The honor was announced April 12, 2025 during the Alliance’s Annual Conference Awards and Recognition Ceremony in Stevens Point.

A longtime champion of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail, James has spent the last 14 years giving his time, energy, and heart to the Trail.

As Rock County Chapter (of the Alliance) Coordinator, crew leader, and Saunters Hike Leader, James has embodied the values the Spirit Stick represents: dedication, enthusiasm, and a deep commitment to service, according to a news release.

“Dennis is the type of volunteer who makes the Ice Age Trail possible,” said Luke Kloberdanz, Executive Director and CEO of the Ice Age Trail Alliance. “His impact stretches far beyond the Trail itself—he’s building community, inspiring others, and quietly shaping the future of the Trail with every project he touches.”

Based on the European wood spirit legend, the Spirit Stick is presented annually (since 2000) to just one individual, and symbolizes a passion for the Trail that has become a way of life. It honors a person who leads by example, lifts others through cooperation and optimism, and serves as an unwavering source of inspiration.

James’ contributions range from Trail maintenance work to strategic community advocacy, where he has cultivated a broad and passionate network of Trail supporters across Rock County.

Known for his approachable nature and steady leadership, James is the go-to person for advice, support, and action on the Trail’s southernmost segments.

“He shows up, steps up, and makes it better—whatever ‘it’ is,” said Kloberdanz. “Dennis is a true ambassador for what the Trail stands for.”

The Spirit Stick recipient is chosen by Alliance staff from nominations submitted by members, volunteers, and colleagues. Recipients receive a hand-carved wooden hiking stick, which is passed along from the previous year’s recipient. The names of the recipients are burned on to the stick.

Following tradition, James will carry the stick to Ice Age Trail events for the next year to share it with other volunteers who also embody dedication and commitment to the Trail.
