JANESVILLE — One person was hospitalized and six others were displaced following a fire at a multi-family residence late Monday night in Janesville.

Firefighters responded to the 400 block of Ravine Street at 11:23 p.m. to find heavy fire showing from the first-floor windows of the building.

According to a news release, one person was able to get out of the building with burn injuries before fire crews arrived and was immediately transported to Mercy Hospital for treatment.

Firefighters used ladders to rescue two additional occupants from the second floor of the home while simultaneously searching the building for other residents.

Crews were able to extinguish the fire and contain the damage to the original apartment.

During the search, firefighters also rescued multiple cats from the residence.

Due to extreme temperatures, additional resources were requested to assist the 35 firefighters on the scene.

No injuries to firefighters were reported during the incident. The Janesville Fire Department was assisted by several area departments, including Lakeside, Beloit, Evansville, Footville, and Fort Atkinson, as well as local police and public works.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
