JANESVILLE — A fire broke out late Monday afternoon in a Janesville mobile home, killing three pets and causing major damage.

According to a news release from the Janesville Fire Department, crews responded to Lapidary Lane on the city’s far southeest side at 5:11 p.m. for a report of a residential fire.

When they arrived, firefighters located a fire in the kitchen area of the home and extinguished it shortly thereafter.

The resident was not home at the time.

However, firefighters discovered a dog and two cats dead inside the home.

Officials said the home sustained major damage during the fire.

The Janesville Police Department assisted at the scene. The American Red Cross is currently providing assistance to the homeowner.
