JANESVILLE — The Rock County Hazardous Materials Team was requested by Lakeside Fire-Rescue shortly before midnight Monday to respond to an accident on Interstate 90 involving an overturned semi-truck tanker.

When they arrived, crews identified that the tanker was carrying approximately 5,500 gallons of a resin solution classified as highly flammable.

Due to the product’s potential hazards, specialized response protocols were immediately implemented to ensure scene safety and mitigate risks to the public and responding personnel. A drone equipped with thermal imaging was deployed to assess the tanker’s integrity.

The aerial evaluation allowed crews to better understand the scope of the incident while maintaining recommended isolation distances.

An entry team was deployed into the Hot Zone to conduct detailed atmospheric monitoring (metering) and to obtain photos and video for further assessment and documentation.

During this initial deployment and reconnaissance, active leaks were identified from two separate areas on the tanker.

Based on these findings, crews initiated grounding and bonding procedures in preparation for the safe transfer (offloading) of the product from the damaged tanker.

The Rock County Hazardous Materials Team coordinated closely with incoming hazardous materials contractors and towing resources, including Dewey’s, to safely manage and resolve the incident.

The scene remained under close monitoring throughout the operation to ensure public safety and environmental protection.
