JANESVILLE — If it were up to you, what would you put in the former GM/JATCO site in Janesville?
Residents can view view plans already under consideration and share their own ideas Wednesday at an open house organized by the City of Janesville and the GM/JATCO Redevelopment Advisory Board.
The GM/JATCO Redevelopment Project: a Community Design Workshop will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 14, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Hyatt Smith Commons on the UW–Whitewater at Rock County campus (2909 Kellogg Ave.).
Attendees may drop in anytime during the open house–style session.
During this design phase, the Community Design Workshop will serve as the venue for public input. While the visioning phase included both an in‑person workshop and an online survey, this stage focuses on deeper, hands‑on engagement, and we encourage community members to participate in person at the October 14 event.
At the Community Design Workshop, participants will be able to:
- Review initial redevelopment concepts informed by public input, market research, and environmental assessments.
- Provide feedback on possible land uses, site layouts, public amenities, and mobility connections.
- Explore design options through interactive stations, maps, and visual tools.
- Help refine the emerging redevelopment framework to ensure it reflects Janesville’s values, economic goals, and long-term vision.
City staff, members of the GM/JATCO Redevelopment Advisory Board, and planning consultants from Stantec will be on hand to answer questions, discuss design ideas, and hear participants’ perspectives.
The Advisory Board is guiding the project through an 18-month planning and strategy process, now in its mid-planning phase. This work includes environmental review, market analysis, feasibility studies, and continued community engagement. Feedback from the Community Design Workshop will directly inform the next round of concept refinement, leading to the development of a comprehensive Redevelopment Master Planning & Development Strategy for future City Council consideration.
