JANESVILLE — The Janesville City Council on Monday voted unanimously against a 60-day extension of its letter of intent with data center developer Viridian Acquisitions LLC.
A motion by Council Member Heather Miller to cease all discussions with potential data center developers until a companion ordinance establishing guardrails was defeated 4-3.
This was the first opportunity that the new members of the council, elected in April, had to vote on the project.
The project’s future is now uncertain.
According to the staff memo, an extension would have maintained the bridge between the letter of intent and purchase and sale agreement phases while the city completes zoning and building code updates and continues to gather public input.
It also would have allowed time for additional community engagement, research and educational sessions as the city evaluates data center codes, policies, ordinances and community impacts, according to city staff.
The letter of intent, approved by the council in November 2025, lays out what developer Viridian needed to learn before entering into a more formal developers agreement. (Read the letter of intent here)
