News release
JANESVILLE — Following a disruptive natural disaster earlier this year, Washington Elementary District officials have announced that the school will remain closed for the upcoming 2026-2027 academic year due to supply chain and repair delays.
Superintendent Mark Holzman released a statement to families outlining the district’s temporary relocation plan, which ensures all Washington students have a safe, stable learning environment while recovery efforts continue.
District officials have spent the past month collaborating with vendors to secure pricing and timelines for critical structural repairs. Recent updates reveal that the necessary custom switchgear required to restore electrical power to Washington Elementary will not arrive until April – July 2027.
To maintain instructional continuity, Washington Elementary students will continue to learn at the following sites:
- Kindergarten through 3rd Grade will attend Adams Elementary
- 4th and 5th Grade will attend Madison Elementary
To ease the logistical burden on households, the district is prioritizing family unity. All siblings within a family will be kept together and assigned to the same school site as the oldest child. The district will shortly release details on how parents can request alternative placements if this arrangement does not meet their family’s specific needs.
“The end of the school year is just around the corner, and we are incredibly proud of the resilience and adaptability shown by our staff, students, and parents as we navigate the aftermath of this natural disaster,” said Superintendent Mark Holzman. “We recognize that this extended displacement is difficult news for our families, and we are committed to supporting them every step of the way.”
The district will host an in-person parent meeting next week to address questions and discuss logistics.
