ROCK COUNTY — A bat submitted to the Wisconsin State Lab of Hygiene from Rock County has tested positive for rabies, the Rock County Health Department reported Friday.
While no human contact with the bat has been reported, this case serves as a reminder that rabies—a fatal disease—remains present in our community’s wildlife.
Rabies is a viral disease that is transmitted from infected animals to other animals and humans.
Bites from infected animals is the most common method of transmission, but may also occur through a scratch.
Rabies is considered fatal if left untreated.
Once an infected human begins to show signs and symptoms, medical treatment rarely works.
