JANESVILLE — The natural gas odor that residents of Janesville and Beloit are reporting is coming from a leak of the odorant only, and there is no threat to public safety, according to Rock County Emergency Management.

Earlier this morning, Alliant Energy says they experienced a lightning strike at its Tiffany Gate natural gas station, which caused a spill of odorant within the fenced facility.

The odorizer was immediately shut off, and trained personnel are onsite managing the situation, according to a news release.

There is no risk to public safety. However, due to the strong smell associated with natural gas odorant, customers in the area may notice a gas-like odor.

This is expected and being addressed by crews responding to reports in the surrounding communities.

As always, Alliant Energy encourages customers to call 1-800-ALLIANT (1-800-255-4268) or 911 if they ever smell gas or suspect a gas leak. Safety is our top priority, and we respond to every report to ensure the well-being of our customers and communities.

The Public Service Commission and Rock County Emergency Management have been notified. The situation remains under control and is being closely monitored.
